The Bloom Report Vol 1 [Bloomology]

A safe space for Black women in tech to flourish and live life in full bloom

“When someone in senior leadership asks you how you are doing, don’t respond with fine, let them know the great things you are working on.” – Minda Harts

The Memo

Happy Friday!

This week in tech, Shopify laid off 2,300 employees, or 20% of its workforce. Why does this matter? Great question! Because I’m already seeing Black women up and down my LinkedIn timeline who are devested and who may be unemployed long-term. We’ve seen this over and over, during the “Tech Layoff SZN” but every time we witness this, it stings a little more. Because there is so much data out there on the fact that Black and Brown women are the groups most impacted by these tech layoffs.

According to The Oveflow, “ Of those who lost their jobs in the most recent round of layoffs, 45% were women—which doesn’t sound bad until you remember that less than a third of tech industry roles and less than a quarter of tech leadership roles are filled by women. Other underrepresented groups, especially Black tech workers, have also been impacted at outsize rates.”

So keep your Black tech friends in prayer. May their inbox be overflowing and their offers be plenty! Today is a great day to champion the work of another Black woman. One promotion or advocacy from just one person can literally elevate someone into the next level of their career. Tell a Black or Brown woman how dope they are. Share their dopeness with someone that is in a position to elevate them. This is sponsorship!
