The Bloom Report Vol 13 [Bloomology]

News, Resources, Opportunities, and Possibilities for Black and Brown women working in tech

A safe space for Black women in tech to flourish and live life in full bloom

Welcome To Friday! 📆

I’m in my “Lazy Girl Job” era and I think every Black woman in corporate deserves one.

I’ve been working since I was 15years old and have two degrees. That’s alot of hard work, effort, energy, mental and emotional fatigue and where is my trophy? Nobody is coming to save us or celebrate us, so we must do it for ourselves.

I’m giving myself the trophy sis. I realized that I was in a “ lazy girl” job this week while listening to the leadership team at work ( made up of all white people, four men and one woman to be exact) talk about why they chose the company and took the roles they have.

The VP of my department went on to say, that he took his current role and joined the company because he wanted a vacation. He wanted an easy job. If he could plan this for himself and his career, why shouldn’t I?

I started reflecting on why I took my current job and why I joined the company and it was for the very same reason. I wanted a “lazy girl job”. A job that paid me more to do less. A job that looked good on my resume and made sense in my career path, but that I could do with my eyes closed.

Mission accomplished! Enter my “lazy girl job era”!

Let me put you on. If you haven’t heard of the “lazy girl job” workplace trend, it’s basically a job perceived as relatively easy and low-effort that allows employees to coast through their workdays and collect all their coins. The hashtag has over 18 millions views on social media with people even creating lists of the top “lazy girl jobs” to have.

“Lazy Girl Job” According To Fast Company

Most Searched “#Lazy Girl Jobs” On Tik Tok

The obvious advantage of a lazy girl job is the minimal effort it. These roles often involve very little active thinking or strenuous work. That means you can zone out and let the hours pass. Lazy girl jobs are low-stress and provide the ultimate work-life harmony or integration since your job won't follow you home at night or on weekends. They offer a high income without burning you out. It’s the freedom and flexibility for me!

Now before you sign up for the lazy girl job, some self-awareness and self-assessment is needed. You have to know where you are in your career journey and in your life because this trend won’t work for everybody. You have to know your why! Choose wisely…

Let’s talk about it if it might be right for you:

***The Not So Good: It Does Have Some Potential Cons***

While lazy girl jobs sound like the ultimate dream, there are significant downsides to consider. Here are a few things to think about:

- If you want to feel challenged and intellectually stimulated, a lazy girl job likely won't satisfy you.

- Don’t look here for your next promotion. There's also minimal opportunity for career development and advancement. Lazy girl jobs can be professional dead ends, with no ladder to climb. If you have aspirations of taking on more responsibility and growing professionally, you won't get there in a lazy girl job sis.

- Don’t depend on getting new skills. The lack of mental stimulation can also impact your motivation and work ethic over time. It's easy to become complacent and ineffective when your job doesn't require much effort.

***Should You Pursue a Lazy Girl Job? Will it work for you?***

The ideal candidate for a lazy girl job is not currently striving and has no current ambitions for career advancement. Instead, they’re looking for low-stress work, lots of free time and flexibility. If this describes you, a lazy girl job might be what you need in this season. Approach with caution and self-awareness though.

***My Takeaway***

That girl! I am the prize energy!

I don’t see this type of employment as lazy at all. I see it as me exercising my privilege, due to having a successful and impactful nine-year career in tech. I am a master of my craft, insanely good at my job, and a thought leader in my industry. So I chose to have a break and a working vacation. I’ll get back to striving and ambition in my next role.

Self - preservation is the goal right now. It’s an act of resistance. Again, nobody is giving you a trophy for grinding all your life, being a worker bee, or for burning yourself out.

Have you made space in your life for a “lazy girl job” or are you in your “lazy girl job era” ?

Cheers to the weekend loves!
