A safe space for Black women in tech to flourish and live life in full bloom

Welcome To Friday!

“They would have to fire me!”

Literally, I shared this with my good friend on the phone today. I’m so unbothered at my job and don’t bring work or stress home. No need. If they are unhappy with me they are going to have to fire me, because I am not in a desperate position where I need to quit. I don’t have another job option lined up at the moment, but I am also unbothered about the people’s job. I’m digging into professional development, taking classes, reading books and articles, and doing no more and no less than what my job description says. I’m just here so I don’t get late fees 👩🏾‍💻

What is on fire to the team is not my fire. I have very little stress, deliverables that I can easily complete with very reasonable deadlines, and most importantly I have defined where my tasks/responsibilities end and where the next team members begin.

This is the most important piece of all of this, so don’t miss it. Check-in regularly with your manager. Ask for detailed feedback with every deliverable and project and have a performance review every 45-60 days.

This is really for you sis. Once per year for a performance review doesn’t cut it. You need to know where you stand, the perceived quality of your work, and if you’re meeting your manager’s expectations regularly, so you can make adjustments if needed. One thing that I make sure I always do, is clearly define the definition of done for my work.

Why? I’m glad you asked. The last thing you want is to get setup. Running around with a super-save-ah cape on, getting burnt out trying to save these companies that can’t be saved.

What I mean by that is clearly and regularly outlining with your manager what the complete expectation and extent of your work is on each and every project. Quick example: I do a lot of process design and service design work in my role as principal DesignOps leader. I always reiterate to my manager that it’s not my job or my role and responsibility to implement the processes, frameworks, and standards that I create. Once I create it and present it, I’m done. DASSIT.

A little something extra: A PSA For Every Black Woman in Corporate America

Let this be the last Friday you do busy work while at work. It’s not good for your aesthetic. You should be focused only on the highest level things. Not every problem at work is yours to solve. Position yourself to be “that girl”. You know the one solving problems that align with your manager’s goals and the organizational goals with your POV and your unique place of genius or zone of genius. Solve the problems that make an impact the bottom line.

You don't always have to do and you don't always have to act.

Okay ladies, until we meet again next Friday!

Have a good weekend!
