The Bloom Report Vol 9 [Bloomology]

News, Resources, Opportunities, and Possibilities for Black and Brown women working in tech

A safe space for Black women in tech to flourish and live life in full bloom

Welcome To Friday! 📆

I missed you last week! I was in them Cincy streets, having an amazing experience at Black Tech Week in Cincinnati which is a surprise vibe.

Who knew? 🤷🏾‍♀️

Ate good! Went to some really dope activations! Heard some insights and innovative perspectives. Meet some amazing, and super-smart humans, and even made new friends. I had a time!

But, one thing is on my mind despite my good time…..

Black women entering into spaces like conferences with a dimmed light, showing up ready to play small. This could mean anything from your body language and how you carry yourself to your willingness to ask questions boldly in a room full of strangers, sharing your perspectives freely, or even where you sit in a room.

I get the sense that some women want to be in the room, but yet be invisible. Let that sink in…..

What I mean is that they don’t want to be seen, noticed, approached, or challenged.

I was approached by so many women about my style choices during this conference. Felt like a lot more than usual ( meaning I noticed it more after the first day) I received so many compliments on my ability to wear sneakers with every outfit. Sneakers dressed up and dressed down.

It made me think about the importance of showing up with intention and moving with clarity and conviction which breeds confidence. Because I know I want to show up, make a scene, do too much, be noticed, be remembered, and inspire others, I can confidently and boldly wear what I want and show up and be hyper-visible. I’m clear on who I am and set my intentions from there. I have found that in every room, I can use fashion and style to make room for me to speak for me or start a conversation for me.

That’s the energy I want to give. I’m always trying to give icon. You’re going to see me by any means necessary!

What about you? What’s your energy in spaces like conferences, networking events, or summits? Do you want to be remembered or invisible?
