The Bloom Report v41 - The State Of Hiring ( as of Q4 2025)

The landscape is shifting. Here's how to position yourself for what's next.

The August Jobs Report Came Out and Here’s What You Need To Know

The Market Isn't Broken, The Rules Changed

I always say, "Don't chase jobs, chase value creation. You know what survives economic storms? Skills that solve real problems."

22,000 jobs. That's all the U.S. economy added in August, missing forecasts by 58,000 and marking the weakest hiring since 2010 ( CBS News). Unemployment jumped to 4.3%, the highest since October 2021, with Black unemployment hitting 7.5%.

Add Trump administration tariffs creating business uncertainty, AI displacing entry-level workers by 13%, and a 1.2 million decline in immigrant workers, and it's clear: we're not in a "soft landing" we're in a crash out.

Yet inside corporate offices and Zoom calls, panic is spreading. The Federal Reserve is prepping rate cuts, economists are whispering about "stagflation," and President Trump fired the Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner for "rigged" numbers. Traditional job hunting—mass applications and prayer circles—isn't just failing, it's backfiring.

But here's the blue ocean opportunity for today's economy: Companies still have more problems than people to solve them. The professionals landing roles aren't the ones with perfect resumes—they're the ones who show up as solutions before problems become crises.

Those who know how to reposition their brilliance, build strategic visibility, and enter warm rooms instead of cold applications are securing opportunities even in this market—often with better terms than they had before. (BTW I teach all of this in my book too)

Here’s How You Can Strategically Respond: Pivot with Power, Not Panic

Bloom Tips - Here's the new playbook:

1. Build Your Bridge Strategy

Don't wait for the "perfect" role. Create a source of income flow while building toward your target or your ideal job:

Option A: Strategic Bridge Roles - Take positions that provide income without compromising your dignity. Frame them as stepping stones, not destinations. A marketing professional might freelance for small businesses while targeting corporate roles.

Option B: Monetize Your Existing Skills - Transform what you already know into micro-services. Administrative support, research writing, resume optimization for others in transition, or digital content creation can generate income quickly.

Use platforms like TopMate, LinkedIn Services, or Contra to list your offerings. The goal: financial stability while you strategically position for your next move.

2. Package Your Brilliance for Visibility

Mass applications to job boards are broken. Instead, of spraying and praying, try creating a positioning strategy that draws opportunities to you.

Your visibility toolkit:

  • Write a "career reintroduction" post on LinkedIn outlining your expertise and what you're seeking

  • Use AI tools to create a one-page portfolio or brand bio

  • Record a 60-second "this is what I do" video for applications

  • Consistently share insights about your industry to build thought leadership

The principle: Show your expertise through content rather than just claiming it in applications.

Here’s my bio masterclass if you need help with that

3. Focus on Warm Networks, Not Cold Applications

When 12,000+ applications don't work, the system is frozen. Time to enter different rooms.

Effective networking in 2025:

  • Join industry Slack groups, WhatsApp job communities, and employee resource groups

  • Attend virtual coffee chats and co-working sessions with former co-workers of people you can respect

  • Message people at target companies before applying: "I'm interested in how your team is evolving. What's the biggest challenge your organization is facing?"

Show up as a solution-finder, a problem-solver, not just an applicant. This approach changes the entire dynamic.

4. Master the Skills Gap Strategy

While unemployed, your full-time job is career investigation. Analyze job postings for roles you want (not just ones you have). What keywords consistently appear? What tools or methodologies are emphasized?

The most successful professionals are:

  • Constantly scanning industry trends

  • Noticing what skills new hires possess

  • Building competency in high-demand areas before they're required

Focus on strategic skill-building rather than collecting random certificates. Choose 2-3 high-impact skills that align with your career trajectory.

5. Leverage Digital Networking for Strategic Advantage

The hidden job market accounts for up to 70% of hires. Your digital presence is now your competitive advantage.

Tactical approach:

  • Post thought leadership content on LinkedIn and industry platforms

  • Engage meaningfully in online industry conversations

  • Seek informational interviews with people who share professional affiliations

  • Volunteer at industry conferences or events to expand your network face-to-face

The Opportunity Within Uncertainty

This period of volatility creates unique advantages for prepared professionals. Companies need problem-solvers who can navigate uncertainty. The professionals who emerge stronger will be those who:

  • Stand firm in their principles while remaining adaptable

  • Focus intensely on a few key opportunities rather than scattering efforts

  • Build genuine relationships rather than transactional connections

  • Demonstrate value through action, not just credentials

Your 30-Day Action Plan

Week 1: Audit your current positioning. What story does your LinkedIn profile tell? What skills gaps exist between where you are and where the market is going?

Week 2: Launch your visibility strategy. Write your career reintroduction post, optimize your profiles, and identify 5 target companies for research.

Week 3: Activate warm networking. Reach out to 10 former colleagues, join 3 industry communities, and schedule 2 informational interviews.

Week 4: Execute strategically. Apply to 5 carefully chosen roles while continuing content creation and relationship building.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 job market isn't broken, it's evolved. Traditional approaches feel ineffective because the rules have changed and you may be operating from an old playbook. Success now requires treating career building as a strategic, relationship-driven process rather than a numbers game.

You're not behind; you're just not in the room where your brilliance was meant to be seen. The professionals who thrive will be those who adapt their approach to match the new reality while maintaining their authentic professional identity and personal brand.

Position yourself accordingly.
